With two days left in 2015, I’m sure many of you are asking the same question that I am — where did the year go?
It’s been a wild and crazy year for myself and many others. Here at Zappos, we said goodbye to a large number of coworkers and hello to a brand new way of working and self-management (see Holacracy). And while it has not been easy, the results I’ve seen are amazing. I love coming to work knowing that nothing is going to be the same as it was yesterday, and facing every new set of challenges has led me to grow, both at work and at home.
This year, I had set the goal of running 12-5K races, a half marathon and competing in a Tough Mudder. Due to repeated injuries, those goals were not met, but I did complete six 5K races, three of them with my 6 and 9-year-old sons, and have helped them begin to establish wonderful lifelong, healthy habits.
I didn’t set new record lows for numbers on the scale or BLI, but I did establish good habits, became a healthier person and tried a lot of new things. Some of the things I’ve tried, I’ve loved (vegetarianism), some I didn’t think were great ideas, but I tried anyway after some research (raw foods), and other things I’ve fallen in love with as new ways to work out and push myself as a person and as an athlete (Scottish Highland Heavy Throwing).
I read some amazing, life changing books that have pushed me to improve as a friend, mother and coworker (“Daring Greatly” by Brene Brown — Oprah was completely right, this woman is a genius, and you’ll be doing yourself a favor if you read it!). I even went on my first real date after some hard work on me. After all, we should all be OK being in a relationship with ourselves before we inflict ourselves on another human being, right? All in all, 2015 was a year to focus on self-improvement and moving forward with a positive outlook.
I am really looking forward to welcoming 2016 in in style, and while I’m not sure which direction I’ll be going in when it comes to celebrating New Year’s Eve, I do know that I plan on looking fabulous no matter what I end up doing. So this week, I’m bringing you some of the finalists for my final look of 2015, and my first look of 2016, and hope that you love them as much as I do!
BRIGHT & SHINY Let’s face it, all black is overdone sometimes — in a sea of black, why not stand out in bright colors and a little bit of shimmer as you declare this the year of you?
LEATHER & LACE There is something very empowering about mixing something as feminine as lace with something as fierce and powerful as a leather-look legging. Add in great jewelry, fierce heels, a red lip and well… watch out 2016, here we come!
AULD LANG SYNE A twist on the LBD or a pop of feminine lace and an unexpected color? Simple, elegant and classic are always a great trifecta for any special occasion. As always, don’t forget amazing heels and a great clutch.
"GILTY" PLEASURE One of my greatest memories of NYE as a kid was watching Dick Clark and loving all the amazing, glittering evening gowns. When Swarovski redid the ball in Times Square, I was in heaven. Glitz, glam and a touch of shine … what’s not to love?
